Properties of Amber
Amber has long been attributed with beneficial health effects. This makes perfect sense. After all, amber is the fossilized resin of prehistoric trees, and resin has always functioned—and continues to function—as a healing sap. It protects the tree from pests and, when the tree’s bark is damaged, immediately forms a protective layer at the affected site.
Pliny the Elder and Hippocrates already mentioned the beneficial effects of amber. About 3 to 8% of the weight of Baltic amber consists of succinic acid. In addition, amber is electronegative, so when it comes into contact with the body, it ionizes it and regulates electrolyte balance. It also has antibacterial and antiseptic effects. Amber tincture strengthens the body’s immune system, helping to alleviate symptoms of colds, fevers, and muscle and joint pain. In traditional Chinese medicine, amber was added to certain decoctions for its soothing properties. And our little ones—infants and toddlers—wear amber necklaces or bracelets to help soothe pain and reduce swelling during teething.
