What is Amber
Baltic amber, also known as succinite, originates from various species of the now-extinct conifer Pinus succinifera. It is estimated that there were as many as 350 species of these conifers. Of all types, Baltic amber has the highest concentration of succinic acid, which accounts for up to 8% of its total weight.
The richest deposits are estimated to be located in the Kaliningrad region, followed by northern Poland, Lithuania, and along the Baltic Sea coast. Its age is estimated to be approximately 28 to 54 million years. It is older than the Baltic Sea itself.
Baltic amber is typically transparent, semi-transparent, or completely opaque—so-called “milky”—beneath a yellow-brown layer of oxidized crust. It offers a full range of colors, from snow-white to beige, lemon yellow, honey, orange, red, and brown. Polish scientist Adam Chetnik defined around 200 variations in his Small Dictionary of Amber Varieties.
But the diversity of this organic gemstone doesn’t end with its colors and forms. Nature has truly played with amber and “painted” thousands of beautiful, utterly unique patterns within it. It could easily be exhibited at the Louvre alongside the world’s most famous painters.
