What is Amber
Baltic amber, also known as succinite, originates from various species of the now-extinct conifer Pinus succinifera. It is estimated that there were as many as 350 species of these conifers. Of all types, Baltic amber has the highest concentration of succinic acid, which makes up as much as 8% of its total weight.
The richest deposits are estimated to be located in the Kaliningrad region, followed by northern Poland, Lithuania, and along the Baltic Sea coast. Its age is estimated to be approximately 28 to 54 million years. It is older than the Baltic Sea itself.
Baltic amber is typically transparent, semi-transparent, or completely opaque—so-called “milky”—beneath a yellow-brown layer of oxidized crust. It offers a full range of colors, from snow-white to beige, lemon-yellow, honey-colored, orange, red, and brown. Polish scientist Adam Chetnik defined around 200 variations in his Small Dictionary of Amber Varieties.
But the diversity of this organic gemstone goes beyond just its colors and shapes. Nature has truly played with amber, “painting” thousands of beautiful, utterly unique patterns within it. It could easily be exhibited at the Louvre alongside the world’s most famous painters.
How to Care for Amber Jewelry
Clean your jewelry regularly.
The best way is to wipe it with a 100% cotton cloth or classic denim. Amber can be cleaned dry or with a cloth dampened with lukewarm water. If necessary, you can use a little mild soap or detergent, such as Jar. Be sure, however, to rinse the amber thoroughly afterward and dry it with a cotton cloth.
Do not use microfiber or any synthetic polishing cloths. Never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, or chemical agents for cleaning. If you need to clean the silver part of the jewelry, use a cloth designed for cleaning silver, but avoid the amber parts.
Store your jewelry carefully
Ideally, after removing your amber jewelry, store it in a cotton or silk pouch. This will protect it from scratches. We do not recommend storing amber jewelry together with other jewelry, especially pieces with sharp metal edges, as this increases the risk of scratching and damaging the surface.
Protect Your Amber from Chemicals
Amber is generally sensitive to chemicals, such as perfumes, hairsprays, or disinfectants. Frequent contact with these substances can cause a whitish film to form on its surface or make it lose its luster. In such cases, the jewelry would need to be re-cut and re-polished.
The colors in the photos may vary slightly from the actual colors depending on your screen settings.
