What is amber?

Dominican amber comes from an extinct tree – the Hymenea protera legume. Today, similar species of this tree grow in South America and Africa, such as kurbaryl (Hymenea courbaril).

Dominican amber is a very rare species. It is unique in its color and optical properties. It absorbs green and blue waves of the light spectrum, which is why it appears green or blue on a black background. However, the color of the amber itself is yellow. More precisely, it ranges across a very wide palette, from light yellow to orange and reddish brown. Very, very rarely, blood-red amber also appears. Blue amber is also very rare. It is also called the "king of amber." At its highest quality, its price is comparable to that of the highest quality natural diamonds.
